The Tan Beginneth

Ha! Had my legs, arms and face out all day today, and it’s been a scorcher. Apparently hotter than Ibiza! We’ve put up trellis on the back wall, planted loads, and D has enthused me for vegetable cultivation all over again. He knocked together a raised bed for the Mouse to grub in, out of two by four, on Saturday. I like it so much I have commissioned another two to grow peppers and tomatoes in.
My dear friend M has given me yet another fantastic book; ‘Animal, Vegetable, Miracle’ by Barbara Kingsolver. All about this extraordinary American novelist’s attempts to go self sufficient for a year. The family moved to Appalachia from Tucson, Arizona and got a farm started pretty much from scratch. I’ve just got to the part where they harvested a fifth of a ton of tomatoes; all organic, heritage varieties. This makes me think that a few tomato and pepper plants, with maybe a chilli or two, can’t be so far beyond me that it’s an unattainable dream.
My father and my brother are both vegetable growers; they somehow seem to get the most superb results where so far I’ve had only frustration. But we’re all growing in the wake of my venerated grandpapa G, the vegetable king. How he managed to grow anything at all is beyond me - hayfever, sea winds direct off the Channel, arthritis; but his vegetable beds, his artichokes, his hothouses and his row upon row of parsley are with me still in my memory. I cannot, to this day, taste curled parsley without being immediately transported back, to sitting on the end of the row talking to him as he dug. I say talk; it was like chess by mail, a zen conversation, like talking to the moon. He punctuated his utterings with the rhythmic jabbing of the fork into the earth, and the syncopation of digging familiar to any gardener. Over the course of an afternoon, we would move the discourse along, while I ate gritty parsley in the sun, salty from the sea air.

What great memories!
I’ve always envied people that keep a vegetable garden. I like planting and picking, but I hate weeding, watering, and all the other stuff that goes with it.
You have me craving for fresh, home grown, organic tomatoes now!
I just had a brainwave. Why not? I’ve never really tried it in all seriousness - maybe Grandpapa is shouting loud enough for me to hear him!!
For some reason, recently, I feel very close to both my paternal grandparents. They died a long time ago. But they’re with me, I feel.
Tomatoes - a fitting memorial to one of the most gentle men I ever knew.
That’s a beautiful piece of writing piereth, especially the bit about your Grandpapa.
Oddly enough, I was in a bookshop for work yesterday and happened across the Barbara Kingsolver book and thought “Ooh, interesting, make mental note.” I’ve loved her two novels, have you read them?
I saw The Poisonwood Bible recently in a shop and now I wish I’d bought it. I believe she’s quite prolific - I love the way she writes non-fiction. Must track down her fiction work too!
Glad you liked it
I love Barbara Kingsolver! I went into a bookstore about 10 years ago and was looking for something to read. The clerk suggested The Bean Trees and when I brought it up to the counter the other clerk said “Oh I love BK! You’ll be back tomorrow for another one of hers” and I was (this time I purchased my fave by her Animal Dreams). I actually prefer her fiction to her non-fiction. The Poisonwood Bible was her first I read not set in the SW of the US (it is about a missionary family in Africa) so it took me a while to get into but I absolutely loved it. I liked the Prodigal Summer a lot as well because it is set in the mountains of the SE and that is where I live. She is a big naturalist and so there is a lot of that in her fiction writing. Actually, along with Jim Harrison I would say she is probably my favorite writer.
I prefer her fiction to non-fiction. Sometimes the NF gets a little ‘preachy’ to me (hard to explain).
Thanks for the recommends about her F, I haven’t made any inroads yet but feel sure I will now
I see what you mean about her NF, I’m sticking to the narrative and taking the factual sidebars a bit lightly. Obviously she’s dedicated to her cause and wants us all to know!!! And not forget!!!
