Happy New Year, gorgeous girl - your festivities sound divine! And the Larousse Gastronomique - how many years have I been coveting a volume of this foodie bible?! Looking forward to the year ahead, and hearing about all that happens beneath those cheering three chimneys. xx

I think the child's name is Mistress Mary (Quite Contrary) and the little parlourmaid is called Martha Sowerby. Isn't she Dickon's sister? Dying of cholera - my grandmother dealt with several outbreaks when she lived in India - I'm surprised our whole family wasn't wiped out by it! Horrid.

Oh, I have absolutely no doubt that's where you got it -- hence the comment. :-) It's Mary, when Sara (that's the brat child's name, isn't it?) first arrives at the house. Now I'm kind of wanting to re-read the book, although I didn't much like it ... even as a kid, I found it overly sentimental and heavy-handed. Plus I hated Sara, even when she turned into a nicer person. And I wanted them to describe her parents' horrible deaths in more detail. A whole houseful of people dead of cholera -- that's scope for imagination!

You'll never credit it but that was the source of my quote. I believe Dickon actually says, 'Nowt o'th'soart', from memory - or is it Mary? Anyhap, that's where I got it. Great minds? Or fools rarely differing? Either suits me, ma pet! Raht gradely, tha be!

Wow, you cleaned up in the kitchen department!

I laughed at "Nowt o'th'sort" -- when I was but a lad, part of my library consisted of books my mother had read when she was growing up, and since I would read anything, I read The Secret Garden several times. I can see that line hovering in front of me as I type ... I believe the surrounding text is something like -- "There I go, speaking broad Yorkshire!"

It's only little I that could pooh-pooh lists and then... make one. Nothing if not inconsistent! :-)

Seriously, this is what I thrive on. Wrapped the pressies last night, which was great fun: watched a re-run of Poirot, listened to Bing Crosby and drank a bottle of Pinot Grigio whilst wrapping. Perfection.!

Reeling. I actually fancied myself a fair hostess until just a minute ago... now I'm wondering, Piereth, if you'd mind terribly running a little online course for us stragglers called Advanced Homemaking for the Holidays.

good god, I'm exhausted just reading that list.

be sure to take care of yourself and give plenty of time to reading with feet up (conspicuously absent from list).

Woo, anything that makes you blow a fine mist of coffee across electrical items gets my vote, hahaaa!!

David - After he'd asked the question it occured to me that we all take lastic-jiggery (as woo so memorably calls it) for granted. How does it work, anyway?

Di - picturebook perfect my ass, it'll degenerate into gibbering lunacy any minute now! :-)

You sound wonderfully recovered, Mistress o' Three Chimneys, and I'm much gladdened to hear it. I loved the fog narrative too - and how about those swans?! No surprise to find your Christmas gearing up to be picture book-perfect (the tram smash notwithstanding), I wouldn't have expected anything less.
